18 Chait, Kathmandu. Immature and ’embarrassing’ Gmail addresses created during school life or when just learning how to use the Internet are making it difficult for some in professional work. But, now Google has brought a good news for those who use such email addresses.

According to Google’s new policy, now users can change their Gmail address without losing any of their old emails, data and account history.

The company has officially announced this much-awaited feature by releasing a video on YouTube on Tuesday.

Tired of your old Gmail address? Now you can change your username without opening a new account,” said a representative of Google in the video.

When the Gmail service was launched in 2004, many created email IDs with different names for fun or at an immature age. Over time those addresses are becoming inconvenient for commercial use. Considering this problem of users, the company has introduced this facility.

How to change email address?

According to Google, the process is quite simple:
1. First go to your Google Account Settings.
2. Click on ‘Personal info’ there.
3. Then tap on ‘Email’ and ‘Google Account email’.
4. If the ‘Change Google Account email’ option appears there, you can click on it and enter your new and unique username.

This feature is currently only available for US users. It may take some time for this update to reach the accounts of users in other countries.

Even if you create a new email address, you don’t have to worry about losing old emails. According to Google, your old email address will also remain active as an ‘alternate address’ and all emails sent to it will automatically be received at the new address.

Can be changed only once a year

There are some conditions to be followed while using this facility. Users can change their email address only once a year. However, Google has also kept open the option of returning to the old ‘username’ if someone thinks that their old address was correct.

According to a spokesperson of Google, in the US for the past one year, ‘can you change the Gmail address?’ It was the most searched in Google search. According to the company, this feature has been introduced in response to the high demand of users.

Many users on the social network ‘X’ have welcomed this feature and some have even questioned Google saying ‘why did they wait 15 years to bring such a small thing’. A user jokingly wrote, ‘So the mental trauma caused by an email like ‘coolboy123@gmail’ could have been avoided earlier?’

This feature is currently only available for US users. It may take some time for this update to reach the accounts of users in other countries. This feature seems to be very useful for media people and technology lovers who have to sit in front of the desktop all day and edit news content and exchange a lot of emails.
