INTRODUCTION OF SYSTEM OF RICE INTENSIFICATION(SRI)

System of rice intensification(SRI) is not a new technology but an improved method of traditional farming system which has been found to increase the productivity of various crop.

Initially, SYSTEM OF RICE INTENSIFICATION(SRI)was started by Henari de  Laulane in 1983 in Medagascar .

However,in Nepal it was started  in 2060 B.S. for monsoon paddy from Morang district.

In this methos , improved seed are not used and no other scientific method are used.Therefore this method is also called LOW COST METHOD.

In Nepal, NARC Khumaltar research on SRI technology in 1998 and its implemention started in 2061 BS.in Morang district.

# PRINCIPLES OF SYSTEM OF RICE INTENSIFICATION(SRI)

    1. Use younger seedling i.e.8-12 days older.

    1. Planting one seedling in one place.( seed rate 5-7 kg/hectares).

    1. Use less water in Paddy field.

    1. Use organic manure.

    1. Plant seedling at 25-30*25-30 cm .

      Suitable varities for Sri :- Radha 7, Mansuli , Chaite 2and 4 , hardinath , Sarita etc.

    1. Seed Saving :- Seedlings are planted for apart. In this method , more than 60% of seed are saved.

    1. Water saving :- Light irrigation should be given to provide adequate moisture , not  floody and water logged condition. Alternate welting and drying  should be done in the field.

    1. Fertilizer saving :- Since the intensive farming method encourages organic farming , the cost of chemical fertilizer is reduced, resulting in saving in chemical fertilizer.

Traditional Farming System SRI
1.This should be understood as old farming system ( the way we have been farming) 1.An improved mrthod of traditional farming system.
2. Transplanting old seedlings. 2. Transplanting 8-12 days old seedlings.
3.Transplanting seedlings too close together or managing distance poorly. 3. Seedlings should be planted for apart or adjusted distance or in a square shape
4.Lack of water control or continuous watering. 4. Instead of always applying water in the fiels, apply water alternate weting and drying.
