Kathmandu. A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against the government’s decision not to provide government advertisements to private sector media.
A preliminary hearing on the petition will be held on Tuesday.
On behalf of Nepal Media Society, Advocate Anantaraj Luintel filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court. Nepal Media Society is the number of publishers publishing daily newspapers.
It is claimed in the writ petition that the government’s decision aims to weaken the freedom of expression provided by the constitution. On March 18, the government issued a circular to publish government advertisements through the government media through the decision of the secretary level of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers Office.
The Prime Minister’s Office issued a circular not to broadcast advertisements in the private sector from federal ministries, other agencies, states and local levels.
It is claimed in the writ petition that the decision of the government is contrary to the Advertisement Act, 2076 and that it has violated several fundamental rights provided by the constitution. There is also a demand for an interim order in the writ petition saying that the immediate implementation of the government’s decision will cause irreparable damage to the communication sector.
